Welcome to the MUSEUMoFOR — A House Museum and Immersive Art Space in the Heart of Richmond, Virginia

Conceived by visionary artist Martin B. Johnson as a space for his studio and gallery, it has grown into an immersive, ever-changing organism and grand metaphor for his vision of the connecting structure of all things.

MUSEUMoFOR is also home to an extensive archive of early works on paper, journals, notes and correspondence with other artists and collectors.

Untitled (First FOR Painting, 1974)

Created in 1974, this is Martin Johnson’s first painting to carry the word FOR — a moment he describes as his “Meta-a-FOR.” This foundational work launched what he later termed A-FOR-ism, an exploration of how language, symbol, and form intertwine. A subtle inscription of the word FOR appears within the composition, like a coded signal, marking the beginning of Johnson’s lifelong practice of turning language into both subject and material.

Guided FORtours are available by appointment Thursday through Sunday, between 10 AM and 5 PM. Each tour offers an intimate look into the artist’s immense oeuvre, ever-changing installations, and never-before-seen archival treasures that make the MUSEUMoFOR a singular destination in Richmond’s cultural landscape. Visitors also have the chance to stop by the FORstore, where Marty’s unique aesthetic extends into gear and objects you can take home.
